North Petherton's First team currently compete in the Somerset Premier division. The average age of the side is now in the mid to late 20s, with a mixture of young players, most of whom have come up through the Junior sections of the club, along with a few seasoned campaigners. The side is captained by Fly-half Lloyd Williams and includes players who have represented Somerset at Colt and Under-20 level, as well as a number of players who have been included in the Somerset Development squad in recent seasons.
The side had a successful 2007/08 season, finishing second in Somerset One and achieving promotion to the Somerset Premier as a result. This emulated the club's success in 2002 when they last gained promotion to the Premier before being relegated two seasons later. Six years ago the squad promoted was comprised mostly of aging players who all retired from playing at the same time, and Pethy struggled to compete as a result. They have since spent the last four seasons fighting for promotion from Somerset One with a mostly new side that has gradually grown in strength and confidence, culminating in last season's promotion.
With only three survivors from the 2002 team, the club now boasts a younger squad of players capable of competing at a higher level of rugby. With a promising group of colts coming through to senior rugby over the next couple of years the club is confident of establishing themselves in the Somerset Premier division.
Under the guidance of Player/Coach Matt Foad this season, the side is looking to build on their excellent form after christmas when they went unbeaten in the league for ten matches, conceding only three tries in the process to secure promotion. It is hoped that the recent success of the side will attract a further increase in the number of players at the club as they look to raise their game and compete at a higher level of rugby.
