The 3rd team travelled to St Bernadettes with a bare 15 following a number of cry offs on the Saturday morning. St Bernadettes were unsure if they had a team as they had cancelled our home game earlier on in the season, but upon arrival they had 21 players but no referee so one of their players fulfilled this role. We still had a strong 3rd team even though there were a few players out of position.
In traditional fashion, we had a slow start, and with St Bernadettes having a larger pack they began to dominate in the rucks and mauls, through some unpunished killing and turnover of ball. The first St Bernadettes try came from a kick over the top and our inability to turn and collect the ball allowed the chasers to pick up the ball and score unopposed under the posts which was then converted to make the score 7 – 0. This proved to be a wake up call and with a number of attacks resulted in a penalty in front of the post which was converted by Cameron Kirk and the score moved on to 7 – 3. The 2nd St Bernadette’s try came from a lineout deep in North Petherton 22 where a wild pass was pounced on by the St Bernadette back row and scoring close to the post which was converted bringing the score to 14 - 3. North Petherton realising they could play much better as a team started to pile the pressure on and drawing in the defence allowing Lloyd Steward to make a break down the blind from the back of a maul and having the legs to go all the way for a try under the post with Cameron Kirk converting, resulting in a half time score of 14 – 10.
North Petherton now playing down hill and with the wind started brightly. With some good runs and more ball available, a resultant converted penalty by Cameron Kirk bringing the score to 14 – 13. North Petherton’s 2nd try came from a good run from Jack Popham from the halfway line into St Bernadette’s 22 and offloading to the forward with great inter-passing and support allowing Pete Woolacott to score North Petherton’s 2nd try which was not converted. With the score now 14 – 18, and 20 minutes to go the players were buoyant. There were a number of substitutes made by St Bernadette and we began to tire. St Bernadettes were now in the ascendancy and started to exploit space out wide and some energy sapping rolling mauls resulted in St Bernadettes scoring 3 quick tries making the final score of 33 – 18.
This was a disappointing end to the game, and most players went away looking to improve this weekend at home to Wiveliscombe.
