In a bruising battle played in a strong wind neither team could gain any dominance with the score line remaining close throughout. Burnham took the lead in 10th minute when the left-winger scorched around two would be tacklers and dotted the ball down near the corner. Petherton responded almost immediately as the forwards carried the ball up to the 22, the ball was fed to the backs and a slick move involving Freeman and Pearn who combined with Stenson who went over the line, Freeman converted the extras. Petherton pounded away at the Burnham line but sloppy handling let them down on numerous occasions. It was from of these errors that Burnham scored their second try as fortunate hack through went straight in to the arms of the right winger who ran 40 yards to cross the line. Pethy then displayed some patience which gradually put them in a strong scoring position, Wolfe tore into the opponents midfield, supported by Kingston, the ball was handed to Phil Hambly who ripped through two defenders to score under the posts which Freeman again converted. All the play remained in the Burnham 22 and five minutes before half time, Sutherland-Earl made a break, off loaded to Kirk who found Jennings who scored right by the left corner flag, Freeman kicking in to the wind drilled his kick straight through the middle of the posts. The half time score 10-21.
The second half began with a few scuffles where players became feisty and the breakdown was increasingly becoming a mess. Petherton played intelligently in to the wind, looking after the ball and using the strike runners to make ground. Another brawl broke out and the referee incredibly sent number 10 Freeman and a Burnham back row player to the bin after the Pethy number 10 was struck repeatedly for nothing more than clearing out at a ruck. Burnham using the wind behind them made ground and after a couple missed tackles they scored under the posts which was converted making the score 17-21. The rest of the game remained scoreless as the Petherton boys defended heroically and robustly. Petherton picked and drove for the last twenty minutes of the game forcing Burnham to attack from all over the park and take extra risks. The final whistle went to the relief of the players who secured valuable league points.
Congratulations to all the squad on a fine victory in difficult circumstances.
