Due to Ivel 3rds cancelling the proposed fixture, Burnham were happy to get a team together at short notice and give the thirds a game. Unfortunately for Petherton’s 40+ brigade, they turned up with a team consisting of ex-colts who currently represent their first and second teams...and so began the hard day at the office!!
The game saw first starts of the season for Stuart Pearn and “experienced” prop, and friend of the club, Trevor Field.
To Petherton’s credit, they started brightly and threw everything at Burnham. The scrum and line-outs were both working well and the forwards often made good yards. It was clear however that Burnham’s success would come from their pacy backs. Yes, they were good, but it was clear that they wanted everyone to know it, Petherton rose above it and put it down to youthful exuberance!
Some questionable refereeing decisions around the advantage law cost Petherton valuable ground at important times in the first half but they continued to defend their line with everything they had. On one occasion Jim Dillon won the battle of the number eights when he held up his opposite number over the line.
The second half saw Dan Puddy move from centre to wing and the introduction of colt Sean Cook at flanker. Puddy’s pace and power became a constant threat and Cook was always dangerous with ball in hand. Despite conceding further tries Petherton never gave up and tackled themselves into the ground. Their tenacity and determination were finally rewarded when good work from the forwards and good hands from the backs saw centre Kris Sewell break 3 tackles and go in under the posts, Cameron Kirk converted. With the amount that they had all given it was well deserved and duly celebrated as if it had been the winning score.
Jim Dillon had another strong game at eight, Dan Puddy played well at both centre and wing, Sean Cook had a good game at flanker but man of the match was Kev Gray at back row. The thirds have missed what he can bring to a game.
Another game for Clarence Clatworthy but still no drop goal attempt.
