NPRFC - 2nd XV vs Crewkerne

Petherton welcomed Crewkerne to Beggars Brook hoping to return to the form that saw them win their first two games of the season. Petherton started off strongly with some good play from both forwards and backs with wing and captain Ben Williams making some strong runs up the right flank. However Petherton again failed to turn possession into points. With the try line begging wrong options were taken.

Ten minutes into the game Crewkerne opened the scoring with a penalty. Shortly after, some shoddy defensive play saw Crewkerne extend their lead with an uncoverted try.

Pethertons failure to keep hold of the ball in the contact area, as well as conceding territory through unnecessary penalties for breaking basic laws of the game saw Crewkerne score a converted try and a penalty before half time.

The score at half time was a poor 18-0.

The second half saw Petherton again start off brightly and they scored a simple try through hooker Nathan Murdoch who pounced on a loose Crewkerne lineout to collect the ball and fall over the line. However, shortly after, Petherton again gave away possession easily at the ruck which allowed Crewkerne to break away up the left wing to score. The conversion was made to take the score to 25-5.

Petherton, somewhat annoyed at themselves, came to life with tries from Simon Ranson and Adrian Tew, Dan Pearce making one conversion. With 5 minutes to go Petheron were piling on the pressure, but once again they gave away several penalties for hands in the ruck and Crewkerne held on for their first win of the season. Petherton recording their third straight defeat.

Petherton however did have several outstanding performances, one of which was young Dan Winn playing out of position at openside flanker.
