Ten tries for Pethy Seconds

16/02/08 - Somerset 3 South: North Petherton II 66 v 8 MIdsomer Norton IV

Report from the Bridgwater Mercury

The visitors turned up at Beggars Brook on Saturday with only 13 players, then lost a prop after ten minutes. The result was uncontested scrums and an unsatisfying victory for Petherton, despite having scored ten tries.

By half time, they were more than 40 points in front as their backs made full use of the space created by Norton being three short. But Pethy fell away in the second half, losing discipline and concentration and even allowing the visitors to score a try.

The home side could have had many more scores, but dropped passes and ignored overlaps.

Lock Wayne Pither scored one try and all the others came from the backs following good support play and handling. Wing Lloyd Steward scored three, centre Chris Powell and scrum-half Chris Wand two, full-back Archie Walford and replacement Ashley Liverton once apiece. Lloyd Steward kicked eight conversions.

The Pethy pack included former Bridgwater & Albion prop Gary Whitcombe, who has been coaxed out of retirement by his old clubmate Larry Steward, the Petherton Seconds' skipper.

Tries: Lloyd Steward (3), Chris Wand (2), Powell (2), Pither. Walford, Liverton
