29th January 2011 - Tribute Western Counties West:

North Petherton 61 v Bude 0

Report by Simon Freeman

The foundations for this victory were laid in the midweek training sessions. After last weeks narrow loss to highflying Torquay the Tuesday session involved fitness and high impact conditioning with the Thursday session giving the players the opportunity to rehearse and fine tune the game plan.

In a match kindly sponsored by Pete Hill of PJL Hygienic Systems - Pipework Contractors of Bridgwater and the ball sponsor Bill Coggins Petherton ripped apart Bude who were only one place apart in the league. Pethy produced one of their best performances of the season on the way to an 11 try thumping of Bude. They played with a tempo that the opponents simply couldn't cope with.

Before the game the squad discussed the need for being positive, both, as players with their attitude and in their attacking play. The game plan of forwards delivering high quality quick ball was executed to perfection. Petherton discussed the need to remain patient before unleashing the backs to make in roads in to the oppositions defence. The patient Petherton forwards with captain Matt Angel typically leading by example went through the phases sucking in Bude's committed defence before displaying the expansive game plan, which Petherton had earlier talked about.

Tries came at regular intervals throughout the game with each member of the team making contributions either through linking play or defensive responsibilities. Bude attacked whenever they had the opportunity but Petherton were a little bit more streetwise than their luckless opponents. The half time whistle blew with the score being an impressive 29-0.

The second half began with Petherton playing down the slope and exerting similar pressure to the first half. The players were growing and playing with obvious confidence as the scoreboard suggested but kept their discipline by sticking to the plan that had worked so well in the first half. The second half finished with another 32 points on the score for an overall 61 - 0 and giving Petherton a much needed bonus point victory.

The man of the match went to the whole squad, who each played a pivotal role with their hard work and support of each other. Petherton, for the first time in many weeks played 80 minutes of rugby where no individual stood out but with each player adding their own contribution to an impressive display. The try scorers for Petherton were: T Williams (3), J Cox (2), J Carter (2), H Roberts, M Angel, A Gibbs and Russ Potter, who still remains as enthusiastic as ever. On a difficult day for kicking S Williams was successful with three.

The challenge for Petherton is continue to play with confidence, build on the team spirit and pull themselves up the league.
