26th March 2011 - Tribute Western Counties West:

Newquay Hornets 3 v 57 North Petherton

Report by Matt Angel

Petherton made a slow start to the game and struggled to get into any rhythm for the first forty minutes. Pethy had travelled to Newquay with a strong squad that included some younger members with no experience. Pethy chose to play into the wind in the first half and struggled to get going, basic handling errors and taking the wrong options meant Pethy were unable to go through the phases. Pethy still dominated all the set pieces, with the front row of Angel, Williams, and Ranson causing Newquay problems all afternoon. Cox was ever dependable in the line out as too was Miles Mcneillie who put in a man of the match display with the amount of turnovers he secured.

The second half was one-way traffic as Pethy played attacking rugby scoring six tries in the process, but, as in the previous week, Petherton let their standards drop and basic errors resurfaced. As the score increased players moved away from the game plan making it difficult for Pearce to move the ball around. Pethy made full use of the bench in the second half, Ben Tracey coming on for Dan Pearce, Kyle Prescott on for Simon Ranson and Dan Winn on for Matt Ranson.

Captain Matt Angel commented " it was a good win, we didn’t play great rugby at times but its starting to come together and our game has improved greatly over the last 12 weeks. We had a few youngsters in the squad this weekend as they have impressed our coach in recent weeks so it was nice to see them involved and getting ready for next year. Well done to all the players and supporters and the support that has been given is greatly appreciated.
