Pethy Commit "Rugby Suicide" !

25th September 2010 - Tribute Western Counties West:

North Petherton 21 v 22 Tiverton

Report by Simon Freeman

On a glorious sunny day in front of a large enthusiastic crowd, Petherton ultimately committed rugby suicide!

Petherton started the first half playing up the slope and in the sixth minute a kick to the corner resulted in a well won lineout and a penalty which Sam Williams knocked over.

From the restart, Tiverton started to utilise their backs and showed their intention to attack out wide. The game then became a battle in midfield with neither team able to exert any dominance.

Petherton finally secured good quick ball for the backs to create an opportunity for Craig Goodwin to score in the corner. Tiverton then kept hold of the ball for several phases to create a well worked try for their left-winger.

The next phase of play involved Aaron Gibbs making a great hit and sending Tiverton back to their own line, however, Petherton's lack of patience saw them give away a penalty and the danger was cleared, making 11-5 at the break.

The second half began with Petherton on the attack but failing to convert their opportunities either because of simple handling errors or turnovers. Petherton became sloppy and failed to get in to their stride allowing Tiverton to gain some momentum, however, Goodwin soon scored his second try after Pethy’s forwards secured good ball and the backs made inroads into Tiverton territory.

Petherton led 16-5 with 25 minutes left but imploded, giving away balls and missing tackles all over the park. Tiverton kicked a penalty in the 58th minute and in the 72nd minute a poor clearance to touch by Pethy gave a resurgent Tiverton team the chance to counter attack. Good interplay sent their number nine under the posts for a converted try making it 16-15.

Worse was to follow almost immediately as after several phases the Tiverton ten kicked a hopeful diagonal which bounced kindly for the left winger to gather and scramble under the posts making it 16-22.

Petherton's heads dropped but they still managed to score a try through Stevens in the corner. The conversion, which would have won the game for Petherton, was missed and at the final whistle Petherton’s players, coaching staff and supporters alike knew they had thrown away a game that was there for the taking.

On the plus side, Aaron Gibbs had a strong game at number 8, Craig Goodwin took his opportunities well and the set piece scrum was destructive.

Next week Petherton travel to top of the table Wellington.
