Pethy travelled to Bude on Saturday expecting a battle from a team that were a few places below them in the league, and a scrappy battle it turned out to be. Petherton started brightly and after 10 minutes were 0-7 nil up thanks to a try from powerhouse second row Mike Coles and conversion kicked by Sam Williams. After that Pethy struggled to get any real grip of the game with try scoring chances spurned.
Bude were next on the score sheet after a break by their backline followed by a series of rucks and mauls by their forwards. The Oaks conceded a penalty and the host's hooker slotted the 3 points. The score then changed straight away as Bude caught the ball from the kick off, shipped the ball out wide to their dangerous backs, who broke through tackles in mid field to score a try. The conversion made it 10-7. Shortly before half time the Bude number 6 was sin binned, unfortunately for the Oaks they couldnt make that extra man count. 10-7 it stayed at the break.
The second half was as scrappy as the first with both sides making mistakes. Pethy's penalty count was also too high, costing them a lot of ground as most of them were conceded in the Bude 22. They were therefore coming away from the red zone empty handed, something that needs improving and quick.
Bude were first scorers on the board in the 2nd half with a well worked try from a driving line-out move. The successful conversion made it 17-7 to the hosts. The Oaks then made a few changes with Simon Ranson coming on for Kyle prescott and Mike Taylor on for Miles NcNeillie. Player coach Matt foad also entered the fray late on.
Pethy spent plenty of time in the host's 22 during the second period but just lacked the cutting edge to get behind them and score that illusive try. Mike Taylor was harshly sin binned in the 65th minute, one of a few strange decisions made against the visitors.
With ten minutes left on the clock Sam Williams slotted a penalty to reduce the gap to 17-10 and that's how it stayed until the final whistle.
A lot of disappointed people after the whistle, none more so then captain Matt Angel who knows that the team can and will play a lot better rugby this season.
The next game is a local derby against Burnham, a match every player at the club will be relishing to be in the squad for..
