A large crowd had turned up at Beggars Brook on Saturday afternoon to witness Pethy get a much needed home win.
Pethy kicked off the match playing up the slight slope, and straight from the kick off were on the attack as a mistake from an Exeter player gave Pethy a scrum in the Exeter 22. After a series of plays Pethy were awared a penalty and a first chance at goal. The attempt went wide.
From the restarting 22m drop out Pethy were again bombarding the Exeter 22m trying to find a way through. With the Exeter defence holding up strong, young Harry roberts made the decision to sit in the pocket and slot the ball between the sticks to get the Oaks on the score board. 3-0 to Pethy,
A mix up between two players from the kick off allowed Exeter their first visit into Pethy 22. Although the ball didnt go to hand at first the Pethy pack cleared the mess and allowed Harry Roberts to clear their lines.
Exeter were next on the score board as a well worked catch and drive lineout was shipped into mid field where Pethy were adjudged to be offside in front of the posts. The shot at goal was succesfull and the score was now tied at 3-3 after 15mins.
On 20 mins Pethy were penalised for an early engagement at a scrum but from the resulting free kick, good defence and determination by young hooker Sam Williams resulted in Exeter being isolated and a penalty was given for holding on. Pethy's second penalty attempt was narrowly wide and Exeter cleared the ball.
It was Exeter who were next on the score sheet as indiscipline from a Pethy player saw the team get marched back 10m presenting Exeter with a kick again in front of the uprights. The kick was successfull making the score 3-6 to the visitors.
With 30 minutes on the clock Pethy had a scrum in the Exeter half. A pick up from the base of the scrum was turned over, and with Pethy players trying to help the referee make decisions it wasnt long before enough was enough and Ben Tracey had a ten minute rest for to much verbal. Exeter found themselves down to 14 men shortly after, a series of penalties around the breakdown gave the referee no option but to get his card out. Pethy kicked to the corner where a good catch and drive lineout was held up just short.
Pethy were lucky to only be 3 points adrift at half time after a mix up in midfield allowed the vistors to kick the ball deep into Pethy territory. Pethy then gave away a penalty 5m out and infront of the sticks. Somehow the Exeter player managed to miss the kick and the whistle went for half time with the vistors leading 3-6 in a very scrappy first half encounter.
Following a half time team talk from John Evans the players took to the field in the second half with a much better attitude and actually looked like they wanted to be out on the pitch. The first scrum of the half saw Arron Gibbs pick from the base and attack the defence with a good offload to Andy Webber. The wise old owl showed great hands to offload to stand in skipper James Carter who broke the line and gained valuable yards. Exeter were penalised at the breakdown area once again and a kick to the corner saw Pethy secure clean ball from the lineout and march towards the line. The Pethy crowd sensed a score and were vocal in encouraging the team to the try line. Veteran flanker Matthew Ranson came up with the ball for Pethy's first points of the second half and the conversion was kicked by Sam Williams.
The ref then awarded Pethy a penalty on halfway after a number of the Exeter players surrounded the referee after awarding the try. A kick to touch and a lineout in Exeter's half was halted by good defence from the visitors.
Exeter Saracans liked to use their backs and attacked at every oppurtunity but Pethy's defence held strong and this resulted in Exeter coming away with nothing in the Pethy 22m. With both teams having their fair share of the ball, credit must go to both teams as both defences stood strong. Pethys final score of the afternoon game after a trademark storming run by Matthew Brown in the middle of the park. Yet again Exeter conceded a penalty allowing hooker Sam Williams a chance to stretch the lead. The kick was successfull and the Oaks led 13-6 with ten minutes to go.
The final ten minutes saw both teams trying to add to their tallys but again good defence allowed nothing to go through either team. The final score was 13-6 and a much needed win for the home team.
There were a lot of good performances on the park, but the Man of the match, sponsored by the Maypole Inn, with one of his best performances in a Pethy shirt went to Sam Williams as he turned over a lot of ball and stepped up to the plate as pack leader.
A very big thank you on behalf of the players and commitee of North Pertherton RFC goes out to the match sponsor Frank Shaw of Trelleborg. Frank brought with him over 100 guests with hopefully all of them enjoying their day out. We look forward to seeing you at the club again soon.
