Anticipation was high after last week’s great win at Wellington, even though today's tough opposition came is the shape of last year’s relegated team Torquay Athletic. The first 25 minutes of play was very even and produced no score, with the Torquay kicker missing two long range penalty kicks.
During this phase of the game Pethy looked very dangerous with captain James Carter making many breaks through the centre and the whole back line looking threatening with ball in hand. In fact if the ball at been caught at cruc ial times then Pethy could have been two tries to the good at this stage.
Torquay took the lead late in the half with a penalty kick which was then matched by one from Pethy. This tit for tat penalty series was repeated again for a half time score of 6-6.
With a minute to go before half time, Pethy winger Craig Goodwin picked up a serious neck injury when tackling a player in to touch. The game was halted for 20 minutes while paramedics were called and the ref blew early for half time and the players returned to the changing rooms. Stalemate in terms of score but a sense of a missed opportunity for more scores. However, Pethy were more than matching their Devonian visitors.
The second half was not such a good half for Pethy. From a scrum, Torquay broke down the blind side and some inter passing led to a try in the corner. The conversion hit the post. Torquay also added a penalty and, not for the first time this season, Pethy were playing catch up rugby. 14-6 to the visitors.
The last quarter of the game seemed to be all Pethy camped deep into Torquay territory. Penalty after penalty were given away by the away side. Sam Williams kicked one to get within a try and Pethy tried everything right up to the final play to get that score.
The last action of the game saw Pethy attack in waves until the ref harshly penalised Pethy for holding on in the tackle although it was a very quick call and he hadn't given time for the player to place the ball. Torquay took this piece of good furtune and kicked the ball into row z of the grandstand. Game over.
Another home defeat but by no means a poor performance at all. Many good performances throughout the team notably a fine display from new number 10 Harry Roberts who had a great game pinning Torquay back with his boot.
Roll on next Saturday when Pethy visit Bude. Payback is needed following last season's defeat even though the game was dominated by Pethy.
