Pethy were forced into several changes this week, Club Captain Lloyd Williams was carrying an injury from the previous week, and influential centre James Carter had work commitment.
North Petherton went to Withycombe on Saturday looking to continue their winning streak. They started the better of the two teams with both the forwards and the backs causing the home side trouble. However it was the home side that scored first, with a well taken penalty. This got Pethy going and they scored from a well worked move, finished off by centre Chris Burge, The conversion was missed. This was the last quick and clean ball Pethy got for the rest of the match apart of the odd moment. The home side was constantly infringing and offside, causing the game to become stop start and neither team were able to get any sort of pattern to their game. Pethy themselves seemed to give away far too many penalties, some correct, but some influenced by the constant football style appealing from the home side and their touchline.
Just before half time the home side scored a well taken try, finished by their second row but created by their elusive scrum half that caused Pethy problem all afternoon with his sniping runs and quick tap penalties. Pethy did get a couple of scoring opportunities throughout the half, but only could come away with one Sam Williams penalty and Matt Brown try, which Sam on his birthday, converted well.
Half Time: 10 - 15
Pethy scored first with a well taken Captain Matt Angel try, which came from a driving maul that wasn’t brought down for a change. Again the majority of the second half continued as the first with the home side conceding penalty after penalty, with only Pethy getting a warning, that if they conceded again they would be shown a yellow card.
The second half saw the home side score two break away trys. One was after a chip through wasn’t taken cleanly and the other from a quick tap taken several meters away from the mark and behind the ref’s back which caused mass frustration. Firstly as Pethy had a golden opportunity to score in the first half but were penalised for taking a tap away from the mark and as George Pettingell was refused a similar try shortly before this latest decision. To the Pethy players' credit they kept quiet and got stuck back in.
In the middle of the Withycombe’s two tries, super sub James Lees restored Pethy’s 12 point lead with a short range try. It came after a 20m rolling maul which crossed the line, but wasn’t grounded clearly for the ref to see. Again Sam converted.
Final Score: 22 – 29.
They whole team got stuck into a very frustrating match, on a heavy going pitch. Jamie Adams got ball in hand on several occasions and ran hard and fast, Matt Foad tackled well and mopped up and kept possession of the slow ball the backs were often receiving.
The forwards all worked hard and would have scored several push over trys if their excellent rolling mauls weren’t disrupted from all angles.
As said before on a couple of matches this season A WINS A WIN!
