North Petherton made a promising start to the new season on Saturday with a good victory over Okehampton in their first ever Western Counties league match. They recovered well from an early try conceded as the young and swift opposition backline made the most of a turnover in their own half to score. However, the Pethy forwards asserted themselves on the visitors after that and denied them further quick posession. Lock James Lees and no.8 Matt Brown scored in quick succession to put the home side ahead, before some great interplay between the whole team was finished off in the corner by winger Sam Hardy.
An early reply by Okehampton after the break threatened to bring them back into the match before further tries by Harley Brown and Lees put Petherton out of reach. The last 15 minutes were scrappy with new players still getting used to playing with each other, but they saw out the remainder of the match without conceding any further scores.
