All of the players observed a minutes silence in tribute to local rugby player Dean Cheffey, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on the 3rd of May

Report by Lloyd Williams

The annual PC Comms Pethy sevens tournament for seniors and Colts took place at North Petherton at the weekend and the event started with a minute’s silence in memory of popular Bridgwater and Albion player Dean Cheffey, who died in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, May 3.

Three Colts teams didn’t arrive, leaving six to compete, while three senior sides also failed to show, leaving nine to battle it out.

The two Pethy teams in the seniors combined so they could have two pools of four.

Even with the disappointment of so many teams not turning up, all the sides seemed to have a good day and players had a good number of quality fixtures.

The Colts event was won by Okehampton, who beat Exeter Chiefs 21-19 in a very heated and intense final.

The senior bowl competition was won by the Titans, a travelling team, who beat locals Blake Bears 20-17 in another close final.

The main cup final and winner of the prizemoney was Lukies Freshers 09 from Exeter University, who beat Taunton team Aniers.

Cup Winners: Lukies Freshers 09, a side from Exeter University, won this year's tournament

They showed their class in the second half to pull away, racking up a 36-5 win.

Club and tournament sponsor Harley Brown, from PC Comms, was on hand to award the prizes. He had also played throughout the day.

The club thanked all those who helped to run the tournament, which will be back at the same time next year.

It is Pethy’s club dinner this Friday night, rounding off a good season at the club.
