North Petherton Seconds were given a reality check by joint Somerset Three South leaders Castle Cary on Saturday when they slumped to a heavy defeat. This was a disappointing loss for the Second team after a recent improvement in their form, but it served to highlight what is needed if they are to challenge for promotion from this league next season. It was not that Cary had 15 better players on the park, the difference was that they were fitter, better organised and played with greater intensity than Pethy.
The Second Team can reach the same level, but it is going to take a much bigger committment from the players to training and making themselves available as often as they can, particularly for matches away from home. Otherwise, they will continue to be a mid-table side, good enough to beat the Second and Third teams from a similar level, but easily beaten by the top sides who take their rugby more seriously. Read the match report here.
This result has seen the Seconds drop to sixth place in the league, overtaken by Wiveliscombe Seconds who beat Wellington Thirds. Weston Thirds and Castle Cary continue to be separated by points difference at the top, although Cary have a game in hand. All of the weekends results can be seen below.
