Petherton maintain their interest in the promotion race

North Petherton failed to find top gear on Saturday afternoon, but still did enough to beat a young and competitive Avon side. Matt Foad carved his way through the visitors defence to score an excellent try in the opening minutes, and it looked from there that Pethy would be in for a comfortable afternoon. However, Avon mounted a strong comeback to take the lead after that, scoring a great try from their own half that was finished off with a 50 metre run into the left corner by Avon's winger.

Pethy eventually pulled ahead following great pressure by their forwards and a neat dummy and finish by Lloyd Williams under the posts, and this was soon followed by another try from Sam Hoare, who collected a neat chip over the Avon defence by Tom Williams to score. Read the match report here.

This win for Pethy keeps them in third place and in touch with the top two Burnham and Tor, who both won at the weekend. Winscombe's match against Bristol Harlequins was postponed. All of the weekends results can be seen below.

Midsomer Norton 15 - 16 Stothert & Pitt

North Petherton Seconds were again without a league match but still remain in sixth position with both winning teams from Saturdays matches already above Pethy Seconds in the table.

Tribute Somerset Three South Results - Saturday 24th January 2009

Chard III 44 - 5 Minehead Barbarians III
Morganians 0 - 18 Castle Cary

North Petherton's Thirds played out a hard fought 14-all draw against their counterparts from Wiveliscombe. Tries by Archie Walford and Jason Carter-Coombes secured a deserved draw for the hosts and Captain Cameron Kirk was pleased to have had a good game against a similarly matched team after some hard fixtures of late. He was also glad to welcome back yet more players out of retirement ahead of their match away to Frome this coming weekend. Read the match report here.

This coming weekend sees Petherton visit bottom side Old Sulians in Bath, always a tough place to get a win at, and against a team that Pethy struggled to put away when they met at the end of October. The Seconds will also be in action with a league match at home against Chard. Both games kick-off at 2:30pm.
