North Petherton's senior team's both lost out to late tries during their friendly matches at Beggars Brook on Saturday. Wellington pulled away from Pethy's Firsts during the last 20 minutes of their encounter with 3 clinically taken tries. These all came from turnover ball, a result of the visitors excellent work at the breakdown throughout. This continually made it hard for Pethy to keep the ball and make the most of the good positions they got themselves into, and the quality of Wellington's finishing gave them a slightly flattering margin of victory by the end. There were still a number of matches in the Somerset Premier at the weekend as several sides played their postponed fixtures from recent weeks. Bottom side Old Sulians picked up their first win of the season to potentially drag Winscombe into the relegation battle, particularly as Wells picked up their first victory since the second week of the season to move within a point of Winscombe who are now third from bottom. At the top, Tor moved two points ahead of third placed Petherton and are now just one point behind leaders Burnham-On-Sea. All of the weekends results can be seen below.
Tribute Somerset Premier Results - Saturday 17th January 2009
Old Sulians 32 - 22 Winscombe
Stothert & Pitt 41 - 10 Chard
Tor 20 - 10 Chew Valley
Wells 16 - 8 Midsomer Norton
On the second pitch a mixture of Pethy's Thirds and Seconds took on their counterparts from Burnham-On-Sea and were disappointed to lose after coming back from 17-5 behind at the break to level with 20 minutes left. However, the visitors willingness to continually run the ball from all areas of the pitch, making the most of their quicker and more youthful players, eventually proved decisive when they finished off some good passages of play to win the game. Pethy Seconds still remain in sixth position with three games in hand, although even winning those matches will still leave the Seconds several points behind the promotion places.
