North Petherton beat bottom side Old Sulians on Saturday to maintain their place in the top half of the Somerset Premier table. With a much more subdued atmosphere than usual at Beggar's Brook following the tragic events of the night before, Pethy did well to make sure of victory in a match that was dominated mostly by the referee's whistle.
As a spectacle it was a poor game, with both teams struggling to put many phases together without falling foul of the referee. Both sides defended well througout to restrict each other to points from Penalty kicks, before Pethy scored the only try of the match just before the end to seal victory. Full-back Tom Williams was the difference in this respect, landing 4 penalties to Sulians' 2. Pethy's try came from winger Ben Williams, who finished well from just inside the 22, brushing off his opposite man to secure the win. Read the match report here.
In other Somerset Premier results, Tor continued their unbeaten run with victory over Bristol Harlequins to stay top from Burnham, who beat Stothert & Pitt. Another round of closely contested matches means that Pethy remain in 5th place in the league, level on 8 points with Bristol Harlequins and Chew Valley, and 1 point behind Burnham. Every other side has won at least 2 out of 6 matches except for Old Sulians, who remain bottom with no points so far.
