North Petherton Sevens sponsored by

Report by Lloyd Williams
This year’s tournament was a much quieter event, with several big name teams pulling out in the run up to the tournament, and with the vast majority of North Petherton players and committee on Rugby Tour in Guernsey, which was accidently arranged on the same weekend. This meant that even though the weather was ideal, there were a lot less players and spectators than in previous years.
The Tournament winners, who took away the prize money and Cup for the second year running was the Usual Suspects. They are a team of players who used to play for Exeter Juniors and use 7’s as an excuse to meet up. They beat a very strong Wellington Chiefs team in the final, although at half time there was only one try in it. However, in the second half the Usual Suspects showed their class and their stylish 7’s play to run away 54 -5 winners. Wellington had beaten several of the other big teams in the tournament to get to the final, including Avonmouth Academy and The Panthers, a team from Winchester University.

The Plate completion was eventually won by the Panthers, who beat a tired Team Boycee, who were mainly made up from Pethy players and several guests from Taunton RFC and Bridgwater and Albion.
The Bowl Competition was won by local social club Blake Bears after they defeated Pethy Colts A ,22 -5. This was a good result after they had lost to Pethy Colts B in the group stages and they mostly put it down to something they were drinking.
Eventually all the results and photos will be placed on the Petherton website for teams to view. The event will happen around a similar weekend in May next year, and the club are keen to involve as many local teams as possible.
This year’s tournament and prize money was kindly sponsored by North Petherton player Harley Brown’s Company PC Comms. |
