North Petherton's senior sides continued their inconsistent league form at the weekend. Petherton's First XV raised their game from the previous week's defeat in Keynsham to ease past Imperial but it was the turn of the Second XV to put in a below par performance as they lost against Tor Thirds.
For the First team they approached something like their best form as both their pack and backline performed well throughout a typically hard fought match. Second row Ben Harvey was at the forefront of the forward effort with a number of powerful runs through the visitors defence whilst full-back Tom Williams punished many Imperial infringements with some excellent kicking. In other Somerset One results leaders Nailsea continued their unbeaten run with victory at Combe Down whilst Burnham-On-Sea moved ahead of the chasing pack and into second place with a good victory over Broad Plain. Wins for Old Culverhaysians and Bristol Barbarians mean that Petherton remain in 6th position, 4 points behind Burnham. All of Saturday's results can be seen below.
Tribute Somerset 1 Results - Saturday 27th October 2007
Burnham on Sea 43 - 10 Broad Plain
Combe Down 3 - 14 Nailsea & Backwell
Crewkerne 11 - 15 Old Culverhaysians
Martock 5 - 50 Bristol Barbarians
North Petherton 38 - 5 Imperial
Wiveliscombe 24 - 12 Keynsham II
The Second Team however were hugely disappointed after a poor performance in the first 30 minutes of their match against Tor Thirds. Missed tackles and a struggling set-piece allowed the visitors too much space and possession, which they used to maximum effect in scoring 4 well-taken tries, despite Pethy taking the lead with a breakaway try by Lloyd Steward. Pethy raised their game up front in the 10 minutes before half-time and threw everything at the Tor defence in the second period but were unable to break through in a scoreless second half. There was another walkover victory in Somerset 3 this week as Hornets Thirds were again unable to raise a side for their match at Wiveliscombe. There were good wins for Taunton Thirds and Castle Cary that saw them move ahead of Pethy Seconds in the table. Midsomer Norton Fourths remain at the top whilst Petherton have slipped to fifth place.
