Comfortable win for Petherton keeps unbeaten run going

North Petherton eased to victory over league strugglers Martock to keep hold of third place and extend their unbeaten run to 9 matches. The match was abandoned 13 minutes from the end after a neck injury sustained by Petherton player Matt Burge following a collapsed scrum. Although the injury was not thought to be too serious, no risks were taken and an ambulance was called (he was later given the all clear after a trip to hospital). With Petherton leading 67-0 and Martock having been reduced to 14 men due to injuries to their hooker and fly-half during a stop-start second period, the Captain's agreed to end the match at that point. At the moment the league points have not yet been awarded to Petherton, but as more than 60 minutes of the match had been completed it is not expected that the game will have to be replayed and the result should stand.

Pethy played some excellent rugby at times with winger Dan Steward scoring 4 first-half tries on his first start for the club. The running of centre Rob Havill throughout the game was too good for the visiting back line, and some excellent support play by the forwards saw a number of good team tries scored. The match report can be read here.

In other Somerset One results Winscombe secured first place in the table with a comprehensive victory over Broad Plain, whilst Old Sulians ran up another large scoreline as they dismissed struggling Crewkerne. Somerton were able to field a side this week but were thrashed at Burnham. Petherton are still in third place and a victory in their final league match away at Crewkerne will secure their highest placed finish in the league since being relegated from the Somerset Premier in 2004.

The Second team also enjoyed an emphatic victory away at Crewkerne Seconds. Dan Steward's father Larry and brothers Lloyd and Ollie scored 5 tries between them as an under strength second team were still able to overwhelm Somerset Three South's bottom side. Read the match report here.

Despite having around 25 players when they played Petherton Seconds last weekend, Taunton Thirds were unable to raise a side this weekend for their match at Morgs, who were awarded the walkover. In the top of the table clash, Bridgwater Athletic gained revenge for their early season defeat by Wells Seconds and probably sealed the Somerset Three South title at the same time. All of the results can be seen below.
