Petherton's resolute defence earns victory

Despite what has been an up-and-down season in terms of results, the one consistent feature of North Petherton's performances has been their solid defence, and this earned them a hard-fought victory on Saturday away at Bristol Barbarians. Pethy had to withstand a strong second half fight-back from the home side as they failed to reproduce the same form which saw them dismantle the Somerset One leaders in their previous match. Read the match report here.

North Petherton now boast the second best defensive record in Somerset One behind Winscombe, having conceded only 138 points so far this season and not conceded a try in five out of their fourteen matches. In all fixtures this season Pethy have also finished five matches without conceding a point.

The top two sides in Somerset One, Old Sulians and Winscombe, continued their march towards promotion on Saturday with good victories over Imperial and Burnham respectively. Third placed Wiveliscombe extended their winning run of league matches to ten with a win over Broad Plain, whilst Crewkerne took advantage of Martock's defeat to move out of the relegation places with victory over bottom side Somerton. Pethy are now up to fourth in the table. All of the results from this weekend, and a re-arranged fixture from the week before, can be seen below.

The Second team produced a determined performance with an under-strength side as they took on the difficult task of playing Somerset Three league leaders Bridgwater Athletic. A committed effort throughout kept the free-scoring hosts down to 60 points and the last 25 minutes went scoreless as they battled hard to the final whistle. Read the match report here.

There was yet another walkover result in Somerset Three at the weekend with Wiveliscombe unable to raise a side for their fixture with Taunton Thirds, who were handed a walkover victory. Burnham Seconds produced one of their best performances of the season in defeat at home to Morgs, whilst there were big wins for Weston Thirds and Minehead Thirds.
