Mistakes prove costly for Petherton

Petherton were left counting the cost of their defensive mistakes on Saturday away at second placed Winscombe. Although the wet and muddy conditions did not help matters, the joint league leaders took their chances, whilst their well-organised defence made Petherton work very hard for their tries in a 22-12 defeat. In other Somerset One results, Old Sulians maintained their hold on top place with another convincing victory at Bristol Barbarians. As a result of losing to Winscombe, who remain level on points with the leaders, Pethy now find themselves in an unfamiliar position in the bottom half of the table occupying seventh place. Unless there are some unexpected results over the next few rounds of matches, it is looking more and more likely that the current top two sides will not be caught. The Second team were due to play nearby rivals Taunton Thirds, but a waterlogged pitch at Beggars Brook meant that the match had to be postponed. Only one match actually took place this weekend in Somerset 3 South as a further two matches were victims of the bad weather, whilst Hornets Thirds and Crewkerne Seconds were unable field enough players to fulfil their league fixtures. Castle Cary were the victors this weekend with a good win over Minehead Thirds.

The fixtures are not getting any easier for Pethy with league leaders Old Sulians their next opponents at home this coming Saturday. The Seconds are also playing at home against Castle Cary. Both matches kick-off at 2:30pm.
