Second Team gain morale-boosting win

North Petherton's First team were left frustrated at the weekend when Wiveliscombe were forced to postpone their league match due to a waterlogged pitch. With a third place finish in the league likely to go to the winners of this fixture, Petherton will not have to wait long for the opportunity to face Wivey, with the match already re-scheduled for Saturday 10th March.

The match between Broad Plain and Martock was also a victim of the recent bad weather as only three games took place in Somerset One on Saturday. Somerton's struggles continued as they were unable to field a side for the fifth time this season, awarding a walkover victory to Old Sulians, who now only need 5 points from their 4 remaining fixtures to secure promotion. League leaders Winscombe remained on course for an immediate return to the Somerset Premier with a convincing victory at Old Culverhaysians. They now only require 3 more points to secure promotion, but will need another 7 points from their remaining 5 fixtures to win the league. Petherton remain in third place.

Somerset One Results - Sat 24th February 2007

Burnham on Sea 8 - 5 Imperial
Crewkerne 7 - 13 Bristol Barbarians
Old Culverhaysians 10 - 45 Winscombe
Somerton AWO Old Sulians

The Second team's match against their Burnham counterparts was able to go ahead despite the weather, and a decent sized crowd were treated to some good running rugby as they outclassed the visitors 87-0. Having endured a tough season so far, the Seconds had a large squad to choose from for the second week in a row, and this helped them gain their fifth league win of the season to keep in touch with the sides directly above them in the league. The match report can be read here.

The weather also led to a couple of postponements in other Somerset Three South matches. Leaders Bridgwater Thirds were somewhat surprisingly held at home by Weston Thirds, whilst second placed Wells Seconds were unable to take advantage when their match at Hornets Thirds was abandoned after 20 minutes with the score tied at 0-0. All of the results from the weekend can be seen below.

Somerset Three South Results - Sat 17th February 2007

Bridgwater & Alb III 15 - 15 Weston-s-Mare III
Hornets III A0 - 0A Wells II
North Petherton II 87 - 0 Burnham on S II
Taunton III 29 - 3 Minehead Barb III

The First Team will be hoping that Somerton can raise a side for their league match at home this weekend, whilst the Seconds will be looking to take another strong squad away to Minehead Thirds.
