Pre-Season Report

North Petherton have been working hard over the summer as they prepare for what promises to be a tough league campaign for their First and Second team's this season. Pethy's senior player's have also been joined in training by the club's Under-17s and Colts players. The club will be running a Colts' team this coming season for the first time in 2 years, having not had enough players to do so over the previous couple of seasons. There have been a few new recruits over the summer as well as some players being persuaded out of retirement by Second Team Captain Larry Steward.

Former Petherton player and current Somerset youth coach Sean Kennelly has joined the coaching staff alongside current coaches John Evans and Kim O'Connor. Together the aim is to improve the standard of Petherton's play and help them towards securing promotion from what will be a very competitive league this season. So far pre-season training has been focused upon improving ball-handling and running skills as part of the coach's intention for Petherton to play an expansive game more effectively than they have done in recent seasons.

There are two pre-season matches arranged for Petherton in August, both against opposition from a level above Pethy. The first match is against Cornwall & Devon Premier side Wellington at home on the 18th of August. The second match is against Somerset Premier side Chard, also at home, on the 25th of August. As well as the usual league commitments this season, Petherton will also be looking forward to testing themselves against the very strong Bridgwater Development side over two matches under floodlights in November and March. This will be for an as yet unnamed trophy, which is currently being organized by Albion's super-veteran Mike Berry.

To coincide with the Rugby World Cup this year the RFU is launching a nationwide initiative to encourage people to take up the game at all levels. The campaign has been called Go Play Rugby (for more details click here) and North Petherton have signed up to it in the hope of attracting a few more players to the club. There will be a number of schemes and incentives running over the next couple of months designed to help get people interested in playing, and club captain Lloyd Williams and Coach Kim O'Connor will be spearheading the club's efforts to be part of this recruitment campaign.

Petherton player Harley Brown has also taken on the role of Sponsorship Secretary for this season to try and bolster the amount of money raised towards buying new playing and training equipment and kit. There are a number of different methods of advertising available through the club, from pages in the fixtures book to hosting an advertising board on the side of the pitch.
