The first ever North Petherton Sevens tournament was held on Saturday 13th May, and was won by the Templars - a team of players based from all around the country. They beat The Usual Suspects, a team based out of Exeter University comprising both old and new students. The score was 45-7. The Templars also beat Los Chicos Locos in the semi, 28-15, who were a team entered from Bridgwater & Albion. In the other semi, The Usual Suspects beat the tournament favourites Apachies 19-14. There was a good mixture of local sides and teams from as far away as London comprising the draw. North Petherton had their own side in Pool Two and made it to the Cup quarter-finals, as did the side Team Boycee which was entered by Petherton player and tournament organizer Lloyd Williams.
The Plate Competition (Middle Competition) was won by the Gypsy Bar Bears from the Devon Fire Service. They beat The Chiefs 22-17 who were a side from Wellington R.F.C. The Bowl (Bottom competition) was won by The Full Minty who beat the Stags 34-0. The Full Minty were an Invitational side set up by North Petherton player Steve Doyle, and the Stags were a very social team, on a stag weekend.
The weather was excellent and so was the standard of rugby, with enough sides entered to make up four leagues in the group stages. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day and looked forward to returning next May, when the tournament will be held again on the 12th. Many thanks to those who helped with the organisation and in keeping the players fed and watered.
