24/01/10 - Under 7's & 8's vs Nailsea

Report by Simon Marshall

Sunday morning saw Pethy travelling en masse to Nailsea, just south of Bristol.  We were hosted excellently, with a friendly welcome, a well marked out pitch, great after match food for the children and some excellent and informative refereeing.  As is the case this season we were unable to field an under 8’s side due to lack of numbers but in terms of under 7’s things were a lot more healthy with the usual 15 or so stalwarts who pretty much always make it to away matches.  Thanks again to all of those parents and coaches who take the trouble to make the journey in spite of the weather or in my case this week a hangover!

MATCH 1

Nailsea on the whole were probably a bit younger and a bit smaller than our team but nevertheless were as expected well organised and extremely hard working and committed.  For us it was a curate’s egg of a game – good in parts but we never really found our rhythm and the stalwart drift defence from earlier in the season was notable by its absence.  In attack we were good with some outstanding individual tries from Sam Cobb, Ben Jackson, Oscar Hallett and Tristan Marshall.  We are in the enviable position that all of our players at Under 7 are fast and capable of scoring.  Support play was also excellent,  Nicholas Payne having a particularly good and hard working game which resulted in a try towards the end.

FINAL SCORE: NORTH PETHERTON 35 – NAILSEA 20

TEAM – Sam Cobb (Captain), Oscar Hallett, Ben Jackson, Nicholas Payne, Thomas Small, Tristan Marshall, Archie Attwood, Patrick Lockyer, Oliver Halliday.

MATCH 2

In the second game Pethy never really got going.  An outbreak of putting feet in touch spread throughout the team and we were very quickly 2 scores to nil down.  Towards the end of the match we did have a great opportunity to level but again an errant foot put paid to this and Nailsea deserved the win.  4 tries from Sam Cobb and another from Ben Jackson kept us in the game but generally our defence was poor and we made too many basic mistakes.

The team have come a long way together in the last year but we still have things to work on in training next week, particularly in defence.

FINAL SCORE: NORTH PETHERTON 25 – NAILSEA 30

TEAM – Nicholas Payne (Captain), Oscar Hallett, Sam Cobb, Ben Jackson,  Thomas Small, Tristan Marshall, Nathaniel Warren, James Grant, Oliver Halliday, Archie Attwood.
