It would seem that in November we can only play teams that start with the letters “Ch”, having two weeks ago entertained Cheddar at Home. Chew Valley is about as far away as it gets for Pethy – One or two of the parents normally have nose bleeds travelling this far north and again the usual litany of poor map reading skills and sat navs with a mind of their own! I for one was feeling somewhat delicate having been out until very, very late the previous evening so standing around in the freezing wind and rain was not exactly what the doctor ordered!
Our opposition were excellent and really looked after us. Particular thanks go to their coach Toby Sealey for being so helpful and friendly and ensuring the game was played in the proper spirit!
MATCH 1
Again conditions were not conducive to a great game of running rugby due the cold wind. Both teams were however very well drilled, organised and did their very best to make it an interesting spectacle. Some early handling errors in attack meant that Pethy were making their lives difficult. In defence however they were awesome and it took a lot of phases of good play for Chew to eventually cross the line. Sam Cobb, Ben Jackson and Tristan Marshall in particular tagging like men possessed in the early stages of the game! The match went pretty much try for try until the final minute or so when a mistake by Chew meant that Pethy ran out eventual winners by one try. The Pethy scorers were Ben Jackson (3), Sam Cobb (2) and Oscar Hallett (1). Nice to see Oscar on the score board again after a couple of dry games as his dad, Richard, has promised me a beer every time I mention his name!
FINAL SCORE CHEW VALLEY 25 NORTH PETHERTON 30
TEAM – Sam Cobb (Captain), Ben Jackson, Tristan Marshall, Patrick Lockyer, Oliver Halliday, Oscar Hallett, Thomas Small, Nicholas Payne
MATCH 2
I told Sam Cobb before the start of the game I would only write about him if he scored more than the previous game’s haul of four tries. This had the desired effect and he scored six! A bit more untidy than the previous game and with again some handling errors, knock ons’s and people stepping in to touch. It was again though end to end stuff. Chew Valley used their “flyers” out wide to great effect showed some great handling skills – something that we at Pethy still need to do a bit of work on. The Pethy drift defence was also not firing on all cylinders. Saying that with Sam in the team we are never very far behind the opposition and we gradually clawed our way back again to win by a single try late in the game. The other try was score was by Ben Jackson, on at half time as our “Super Sub” – Ben has now scored more tries this season than his dad, Lee, did in his whole career!
FINAL SCORE CHEW VALLEY 30 NORTH PETHERTON 35
TEAM – Archie Atwood (Captain), Daniel Osianka, Will Dyer, Sam Cobb, Patrick Lockyer, Nathaniel Morris, Ben Jackson, Nicholas Payne
