21st March 2010 - Under 7's & 8's vs Taunton

Report by Simon Marshall

A sunny Sunday morning at Beggars Brook saw the visit of Taunton. A very well supported club, they always come to Pethy “en masse” and are always well coached and formidable opponents.

MATCH 1

It is always a close match against Taunton mini’s and today was no exception. As has been the case for most of the season Pethy took some time to get into their rhythm and some excellent drift defence from both sides saw the score as one try each at half time. In the second half the Pethy attack started to create some gaps in the Taunton defence and were a try up until the dying seconds allowed some breathing space. Some great individual performances particularly from Oliver Halliday who should have scored in the opening seconds but thought he had been tagged but more than made up for it in the second half. A great try also from the Pethy Captain, Archie Attwood, who having listened to the coaches ran forward at speed from the halfway line, the defender missed his tag and he was over for a simple yet very effective try. Other try scorers were Sam Cobb (2), Ben Jackson (1) and Oscar Hallett (1) who also provided some great support play throughout the game.

FINAL SCORE NORTH PETHERTON 30 – TAUNTON 20

TEAM: – Archie Attwood (Captain), Patrick Lockyer, Oliver Halliday, Oscar Hallett , Sam Cobb, Ben Jackson, Nicholas Payne

MATCH 2

Match 2 saw a very young and inexperienced Pethy side (3 Pethy players playing their 1st game having only previously been to one training session) against a skilful Taunton side. Pethy were quickly four tries to nil down but to be fair did not give up trying and the final score of five tries to two was probably a fair reflection of the game. The two tries for Pethy both coming from boys on their debut, Liam Hillier & Callum Bolton, who both show great promise. Double pocket money all round please mums and dads!!!

It could have been two tries for Callum who scored a great try after catching a ball that went miles into the air only for it to be disallowed by ref Lee Jackson on the minor technicality that it went three metres forward!!!

FINAL SCORE NORTH PETHERTON 10 – TAUNTON 25

TEAM: – Nathaniel Warren (Captain), Tristan Marshall, Daniel Osianka, George Small, Thomas Small, Liam Hillier, Callum Bolton, Thomas MacDonald
