11th April 2010 - Under 7's & 8's vs Winscombe & Bath

Report by Simon Marshall

The 4th October 2009 and our first match of the season against Castle Cary seemed a long time ago as we made our way to Winscombe for the last match of the season. In the intervening 6 months to team have grown and grown due mainly to their own hard work and that of the coaching team. The final Sunday also pitted us in what were potentially our toughest games; Winscombe who had recently won the Chew Valley under 7’s tournament and the always strong Bath.

MATCH 1

This was an excellent game between two very good and well coached teams. Either side could have won it, and the game ebbed and flowed towards the end due mainly to some handling errors but a draw was a very fair result. For Pethy the attacking side of the game was excellent with tries from Sam Cobb (3), Oscar Hallett (1) Oliver Halliday (1) Nick Payne (1) and Liam Hillier (1). Support from the whole team could not be faulted and this time the Pethy defence was equally as good.

We don’t normally mention the opposition try scorers but as I was keeping score we kept their names – Jim Bob (3), Will (2), Freddy (1) & Eddie G (1).

FINAL SCORE: NORTH PETHERTON 35 – WINSCOMBE 35

TEAM: – Archie Attwood (Captain), Oliver Halliday, Oscar Hallett, Sam Cobb, Nicholas Payne, Tristan Marshall, Liam Hillier, Callum Bolton

MATCH 2

Match 2 saw the same 8 players take on Bath. Again an excellent all round team performance from Pethy. A couple of mistakes from Bath players in going into touch were well capitalised on by the Pethy players and they were very quickly 3 scores to nil up. Defence was good with Sam Cobb & Oscar Hallett coming out of the line to chase opposition players down while the rest of the team spread out to form a defensive line.

Tries from Pethy were Nick Payne (2), Sam Cobb (1), Oscar Hallett (1), Oliver Halliday (1) & Liam Hillier (1). Special mentions must go to Nick Payne who in the latter half of the season have really excelled in support play. Whenever a Pethy player gets tagged near the line he is always on hand to take the ball and get it over the line. Also to Oliver Halliday who scored two tries from deep, one in the first game and one in the second and who grows in confidence every week.

FINAL SCORE: NORTH PETHERTON 30 – BATH 5

TEAM: – Archie Attwood (Captain), Oliver Halliday, Oscar Hallett, Sam Cobb, Nicholas Payne, Tristan Marshall, Liam Hillier, Callum Bolton

MATCH 3

Normally I only make a point of writing match reports for the first two matches but as I was keeping score for the referee I thought I may aswell put some words together for this one too.

Generally this was a younger and less experienced Pethy side with three of the players having only joined the club in the last month. Again it was a really good all round performance with everyone in the team playing their part. An excellent individual try from Daniel Osianka, 2 more from Sam Cobb, 1 from Oscar Hallett and one from Nick Payne meant another convincing win against good opposition.

FINAL SCORE NORTH PETHERTON 25 – BATH 10

TEAM: – Archie Attwood (Captain), Oliver Halliday, Oscar Hallett, Sam Cobb, Nicholas Payne, Daniel Osianka, Thomas McDonald, Nathaniel Morris, Liam Hillier
