The first Sunday of the New Year saw the mini’s travelling to Minehead. The proximity of the pitch to the sea meant that it was not frozen and we were able to play but a bitterly cold wind meant a chilly couple of hours for players, coaches and parents!
Our ongoing shortage of eligible players in the under 8 category meant that we were unable to field an under 8 team but the 3 under 8’s who travelled (George Small, Will Grant & Will Dyer) played in a match with Minehead under 8’s and as would be expected acquitted themselves well.
MATCH 1
The under 7’s from Minehead and Pethy were well matched in terms of age, size and skills which made for a couple of really good and close games. Considering the weather again the skills on show were generally excellent but one or two dropped balls made the difference in terms of the final score. Tries were evenly spread with Sam Cobb (4), Thomas Small (1), Nathaniel Morris (1), Ben Jackson (2) & Nicholas Payne (2). The Pethy defence was however not its normal well organised arrangement with enough gaps appearing to let Minehead score pretty much every time they had the ball.
FINAL SCORE: NORTH PETHERTON 45 – MINEHEAD 50
TEAM – Oscar Hallett (Captain), Sam Cobb, Ben Jackson, Nicholas Payne, Thomas Small, Tristan Marshall, Nathaniel Morris, James Grant, Curtis Barland.
MATCH 2
This time the defence from Pethy was more organised and some superb tagging from all and from Sam Cobb in particular made the difference. A hat trick of tries apiece from Oscar Hallett and Ben Jackson both showing great speed and vision started the scoring off and further tries from Sam Cobb (2), Nicholas Payne (2), Thomas Small (1) and James Grant making it 2 tries in 2 games for Pethy meant a comfortable win.
FINAL SCORE: NORTH PETHERTON 60 – MINEHEAD 50
TEAM – Curtis Barland (Captain), Oscar Hallett, Sam Cobb, Ben Jackson, Nicholas Payne, Thomas Small, Tristan Marshall, Nathaniel Morris, James Grant.
