Nine man Pethy show pride in heavy defeat

28/02/09 - Friendly: Ivel Barbarians Vets 77 v 17 North Petherton III

Report by Cameron Kirk

Based on the number who eventually travelled to Ivel- NINE - this was Petherton’s most disappointing game of the season.  To make matters worse the fixture was supposed to be Ivel 3rds and ended up being Ivel vets.  Unfortunately this comprised of their old first team and was probably the best team that Petherton had played all season.  To Ivel’s credit though they had promised to lend Petherton the required number and from the outset it has never been Petherton’s intention to cancel a game.  And so, the fun began....

Ivel ran everything and it took great defence just to keep the score down.  At one point it looked as though Petherton may never get on the scoreboard but following a break from fly half Kris Sewell, centre Roger Evans touched down.  Petherton’s second try came from a clever kick off by scrum half Cameron Kirk.  He fed Kris Sewell who gave the scoring pass to one of our Ivel loanees.

The second half saw more of the same...Ivel ran everything and Petherton tackled themselves into the ground.  They were rewarded with a further try, again from an Ivel loanee, Cameron Kirk converted.

All nine should be applauded for maintaining the Petherton pride.  Thanks also goes to the players from Ivel who chose to play for Petherton and decided to stay with them for the second half despite having the opportunity to go back to their own team.

It was assumed that Clary was too busy tackling to even contemplate a drop goal.
