Petherton fielded a mixture of seconds and thirds and faced a strong Burnham team consisting of several first team players. Three of these were in the backs and it was through them that Burnham raced into a 17-0 lead. Petherton continued to battle hard and debutant Will Munn was at the forefront of their best opportunities. To Burnham’s credit they defended superbly and it looked as though Petherton would not find a way through. However as Petherton’s pack came more and more into the game Burnham’s line was under intense pressure and on the stroke of half-time scrum-half Neil Lennox followed up his own box-kick, hacked on and beat two Burnham players to the ball, winger Lloyd Steward converted. It was just reward for the effort that the team had put in throughout the first half.
The second half saw the best of Petherton and they spent most of the next 25 minutes camped in the Burnham half. Burnham continued to defend well but could do nothing to stop an excellent team try finished off by wing Lloyd Steward. After several phases of play the ball went wide via both backs and forwards leaving Lloyd to beat the last defender and score under the posts, he also converted. Petherton’s tails were up and a Lloyd Steward penalty brought them level. A win was now definitely possible. However with 15 minutes to go Petherton lost influential second row Pete Kingston to a back injury. Coupled with this the team began to tire and some poor tackling allowed the Burnham backs to sore 3 quick tries. To Petherton’s credit they kept going forward and were rewarded with a last minute try by scrum-half Kev Rybaruk, Lloyd Steward converted.
This was an excellent game and an excellent team performance. Pete Kingston and his second row partner Adrian Tew were outstanding as was flanker Will Munn. It was noted that Will had a bit of “Nick Rees” about his game!!
