27th February 2010 - Tribute Somerset Two South:

North Petherton II 48 v 5 Chard II

Report by Ben Williams

Petherton entertained Chard after the original pre Christmas fixture had been postponed due to a frozen pitch. After suffering a 30 point defeat away at Chard earlier in the season they were out for revenge. On that day Chard had the benefit of fielding a team of which at least 5 or 6 were regular first XV players. This time however Petherton had the luxury of having several first team players available and they fielded club captain Lloyd Williams who hasn’t played for a couple of weeks, No 8 Matt Brown, Tom Williams, Simon and Matt Ranson who were all playing slightly out of position. The majority of the team were all regular second XV players all of which had a good game. Chard's captain somewhat un-sportingly decided that Petherton were only allowed to field 3 substitutions, this denied three regular second team players a chance of a game.

Petherton started off excellently interlinking well with great off loading and direct running which resulted in Tom Williams scoring out wide within the first 5 minutes, with Harry Roberts converting. Petherton's debutant second row Ben Stewart scored the next try crashing over following some good work by the forwards, Roberts again converting. Petherton's dominant pack again set up the third & fourth tries for second and back row brothers Simon and Matt Ranson, however, Roberts missed both conversions. Chard rarely threatened Petherton's line and their only score came from a Pethy knock-on which Chard gathered and broke away up the slope to score. The try was unconverted and the half time score was 24 -5.

With Petherton playing the second half up the hill, things started off well with centre Robin Havill making a great line break to score out wide with Roberts adding the extra two points. The next try came when Tom Williams broke up the right hand side and with him looking to set up skipper Ben Williams he chipped over the three defenders. The kick was slightly out of reach for Williams but he was able to delicately flick the ball on to full back Sutherland-Earl to score in the corner. Roberts was unable to kick theextra points. Skipper Williams had his moment 5 minutes later when after some good mauling up the field the ball came wide to hooker Nathan Murdoch who off loaded to Williams who had to dive down low and gather the ball in motion and score in the corner. Roberts made an excellent conversion going over off the cross bar. The final try came from the opposite winger Luke Williams after some good running from the back line, however the conversion was missed.

The final score was a comprehensive 48 -5 victory, which hopefully gave some slight consolation to the players which were denied a game.

Next week The 2nd XV entertain Somerton.
