13th March 2010 - Tribute Somerset Two South:

Crewkerne 18 v 18 North Petherton II

Report by Ben Williams

Petherton 2nds travelled to Crewkerne, which was always going to be a tough game despite Crewkerne being in the lower half of the table.

Crewkerne started the stronger of the two sides with Petherton being slow to get going. This allowed Crewkerne plenty of possession and territory and they soon took the lead through a penalty. Petherton hit back with a penalty of their own through full back Mike Stevens. However Crewkerne soon responded with a try after some powerful running through the centre of the field, they moved the ball wide to score in the corner, the conversion was missed.

Petherton then started to get going and the backs started to run at Crewkerne, with Stevens running from deep he often broke the line making deep inroads into the opposition territory. After a Stevens run Petherton were held up on the Crewkerne line, but a case of white line fever broke out and the ball failed to get passed out wide and with a three man overlap a try went begging. Petherton did get a penalty from the excursion which was kicked by Stevens. Another try went a miss straight after when Stevens again broke up the right and with only the full back to beat he drew his man to feed in skipper Ben Williams but the pass was judged to have gone forward. Some poor defence then let Crewkerne break through the middle and they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which they duly kicked.

The score at half time was 11-6.

Petherton came out ready to respond and quickly did through scrum half Samuel Tozer who made a typical jinking run, stepping around a couple of defenders to score under the posts. The conversion was kicked by Stevens.

Petherton's next try came after some excellent work by open side flanker Miles McNellie who stripped the opposition scrum half from the back of a scrum and then fed number 8 Chris Richards who ran in from the Crewkerne 10 metre line. Stevens struck an excellent kick which went over the top of the post which the referee ruled out. The score was now 18-11 to Petherton.

Then heart break for Pethy who tried to do too much with the ball and instead of playing in the Crewkerne half they opted to run from their own half. A knock on gave Crewkerne the ball, where they then broke up the right and kicked ahead. Petherton cleared into touch and from the resulting lineout Crewkerne moved the ball out to the backs and their powerful fly half crashed over under the posts. The resulting conversion levelled the scores and brought up the final whistle. Petherton were obviously annoyed to have thrown away their lead and continue their winning run, but with three games to go a top three finish is still a possibility.

Next week Petherton entertain Ivel Barbarians 2nd XV.
