Petherton continued their excellent run of victories in 2010 with a comprehensive victory over Somerton, who had started the day above Petherton, but the positions were reversed after the final whistle.
Petherton opened the scoring within the first 5 minutes through scrum half Samuel Tozer after a jinking run from the back of a scrum in Somerton’s 22. He side stepped 3 players to score in the corner. Fly half Harry Roberts missed the conversion. Roberts then slotted 3 penalty kicks in quick succession taking the score to 14-0.
Petherton continued to dominate both up front and in the backs. The lineout and scrummaging was excellent with the backs tackling everything in front of them. Petherton did miss a couple of opportunities to score with some loose passes, but generally everyone played well.
Petherton finished the first 40 minutes with a try from number 8 Chris Richards who was returning from a broken hand, Roberts missed the conversion.
The second half was a different story with the majority of play happening in the middle of the field. Somerton to their credit played well, but Petherton’s defence was excellent especially considering they were reduced to 13 men for 10 minutes after Pither and Jennings were sent to the sin-bin. Petherton still played well, but some basic errors resulted in the breakdown of many attacks.
This victory bodes well for the remaining 4 matches of the season with the main target being a top three finish.
