North Petherton II’s 19 v Castle Cary 5.
Petherton entertained a young, but strong Castle Cary side who were immediately above them in the league by a single point before this game. Petherton fielded a strong side of there own including Simon Ranson making his seasonal debut at prop after a long knee injury and Andy Webber also returning from injury to play in the centre.
Petherton started off strongly with the forwards making good ground down the slope into Cary’s half, but some poor hands on a wet and windy day often led to the ball going to ground and therefore being unable to capitalise. The Petherton pack dominated overall in the scrum, but it was by no means an easy contest to win. With Pethy securing their own ball in Cary’s 22 after a long period of pressure, number 8 Chris Richards powered over for the first score. The conversion was made by Harry Roberts. As with the previous week's game Petherton followed up with another quick try through stocky wing Lee Palmer who powered over from 10 metres out following a well worked backs move. The conversion was missed. On the stroke of half time Cary had a scrum on their own 5 metre line, Petherton exerted some serious pressure and the ball popped out only for Cary’s fly half to fumble, which allowed Miles McNellie to pounce on to score. Roberts kicked the conversion making it 19-0 at half time.
The second half turned out to be a more even affair and with Pethy playing up the slope into a strong wind and with the light deteriorating quickly, attacking play was at a premium. Cary had far more possession, but Pethy’s defence was strong and with Jon Dicker and Ben Long excelling in the lineout and Ex 1st team captain Russ Potter having an outstanding game, Petherton snuffed out many of Cary’s attacking opportunities. Cary scored their only points mid way through the half through their captain and full back following a strong run down the right flank. Petherton held out for the rest of the game for a deserved victory. This win now moves Pethy above their opponents in the league.
