Seconds disappointing in home defeat

27/10/07 - Tribute Somerset Three South: North Petherton II 5 v 26 Tor III

Pethy Seconds were very disappointed with their performance in this match and it was was their slack start in particular during the first 30 minutes that cost them the game. Their line-out struggled all afternoon as Tor's lanky second row was able to poach the majority of Petherton's throw-ins. Their scrum also struggled and some poor tackling in defence let in Tor for 4 tries in that opening 30 minute spell.

All of this was despite Pethy taking an early lead against the run of play, when a good kick over the Tor defence by centre Lloyd Dormer from just inside his own half, saw Petherton win the breakdown in the Tor 22 and full-back Lloyd Steward was able to pick the ball up from the ruck and dive over for the score. He was unable to convert the try from wide out.

This failed to spark Pethy into upping their game and they spent the next 20 minutes giving away possession. Tor were able to take advantage of this to score some well-taken tries as their backs frequently made it past the gain-line and off-loaded well to supporting runners as they carved open the Pethy defence almost at will.

For a brief period before half-time the Petherton pack finally began to get into the game and were unlucky to be held up short on a couple of occasions as they picked and drove their way towards the Tor line. However, they failed to make the most of this pressure and went into half-time 21 points behind.

The second half was a much tighter affair as Pethy controlled the majority of possession, and now playing down the slope, spent most of their time in the visitors half. They were met with some continuously whole-hearted defence from Tor who did not look in the mood to relinquish their lead. Every time Pethy managed to get themselves into good positions they were turned over at the ruck or made an unforced error to give the ball away.

After Pethy grafted for most of the half for no reward, Tor eventually broke away and spent the last 5 minutes attacking inside the Pethy 22. This time however they were met with some much better defence although at this point the players knew that the match had gone.

Whilst Pethy will regard this match as one of their worst performances, credit must go to Tor who played some excellent rugby at times, particularly in the first half, and who were well-organised in defence as they sealed a deserved victory. For Petherton, captain Larry Steward led by example as usual and debutante back row Ben Georgy looked promising after coming on at the break.
