Second-half power pays for Pethy Seconds

08/03/08 - Somerset 3 South: North Petherton II 31 v 22 Wells III

Report from the Bridgwater Mercury

Wells turned up a man short, but with the addition of long-time Pethy club servant Clarence Clatworthy, they looked more than capable. The home side had no answer to Wells in the first half and, 15-0 down, were lucky still to be in it.

A rare Pethy attack down the left wing won a penalty, allowing Wayne Pither to score his ninth try of the season. Lloyd Steward converted, making the half-time score 15-7 to Wells.

After a rollicking from captain Larry Steward, the real Pethy emerged and a superb break from Kev Gray sent the skipper over. Lloyd Steward's conversion reduced the deficit to one point and Pethy started to fizz, with the forwards dominating.

Centres Dan Steward and Chris Powell were rampant, halting all the Wells momentum out wide and are looking a match-winning partnership.

Pethy used their superior pace in the backs and Lloyd Steward scored in the left corner to put them ahead for the first time. He scored his 17th try of the season soon afterwards, but Wells went over under the posts with ten minutes left, cutting Pethy's lead to two points.

The home side held their nerve well and Chris Wand sealed victory, scoring straight from the restart with a fine solo effort. Lloyd Steward converted.
