Pethy seconds beaten in highly entertaining match

28/10/06 - Somerset Three South: Taunton III 74 v 40 North Petherton II

Report from the Bridgwater Mercury

Petherton Seconds scored six tries but still lost by 34 points in a cracking game of rugby at Taunton on Saturday. This was despite having to call out of retirement such players as Tony Crocker, John Nicholls, and Carl Fury when two of the selected side failed to turn up.

In a match brought forward to avoid the North Petherton carnival next weekend, the Pethy forwards were in terrific form, with former Bridgwater & Albion first-teamer Larry Steward, second row Nick Pocock, and diminutive hooker Fury outstanding.

The main difference between the sides was the running ability of the Taunton players in broken play, which earned them two tries in the first 15 minutes and a 29-7 lead by the interval. In the second half it was try-for-try, with Pethy having the last word through centre Simon Midgley who scored the last try of the match. A twenty point deficit was a close as Petherton got in the match.

The other Petherton scores came from flanker Matt Varcoe (2), centre Archie Walford, prop John Webber, and wing Lloyd Steward. Mark Sutherland-Earl kicked 5 conversions.
