Seconds heavily beaten by Wells

17/03/07 - Somerset Three South: North Petherton II 7 v 92 Wells II

Report from the Bridgwater Mercury

The second-placed team, who meet Bridgwater & Albion Athletic in a title decider on the Saturday after next, were too quick out behind for Petherton on Saturday.

Wells were worth a 60-point win, but several of their scores were debatable, following knock-ons and obstructions. They led 38-0 at half-time and, though the home side conceded 54 further points, their second-half performance was an improvement.

Veteran No 8 Larry Steward scored their try, converted by another oldie Mark Sutherland-Earl. The powerful Steward secured a lot of possession for Petherton, who were unable to preserve it regularly.

When the home side did make breaks, they failed through lack of support, whereas Wells often made 40 or 50 yards with their pace. Flanker Kev Gray also had a good game for Petherton, who had a few regulars missing.
