Brothers Sam (17) and Nathan (19) Chillingworth joined their dad Mike (48), the Petherton Captain, in the Seconds side for this fine victory at Beggars Brook on Saturday. Both sons played on the wing, with Sam scoring a hat-trick of tries. Minehead had been expected to win this fixture, but the home side's mixture of youth and experience worked very well.
With half-backs Paul Hill and Mark Sutherland-Earl and centres Archie Walford and Stuart Pearn providing the experience in the backs with the pace of the youngsters, the home side led 10-7 at the interval through tries by Walford and Sam Chillingworth following a scoreless first 20 minutes.
Mike Chillingworth led the pack with typical commitment from the second row, as Pethy used the slope in the second half to add three more tries through Stuart Pearn and Sam Chillingworth (2). Sam’s final try was right out of the top-drawer, as the forwards rucked and mauled their way down the field, before the ball went through the hands of all the backs, including full-back Lloyd Steward, before Sam went over in the corner.
Sutherland-Earl added 2 conversions as Petherton Seconds notched up their first ever league victory.
