Pethy Win Friendly Against Newquay

20th March 2010 - Friendly:

North Petherton 32 v 14 Newquay

Report by Lloyd Williams

This match was over before it began, with the visitors informing Pethy on Thursday that they were unable to field a front row, with 8 possible front row players out. However they fulfilled the fixture, which gave the Petherton Players' Reunion a match to watch.

Pethy started well and looked the more likely to score. However, after a long clearance kick by the visitors, which was poorly taken, the Newquay winger collected first and scored a converted try.

It wasn’t too long before Pethy were in the visitors' half again. A couple of good phases brought a penalty in Pethy’s favor. Sam Williams tapped quickly but was tackled without moving, resulting in a yellow card for the visitors' stand in front row.

Pethy with the man advantage began to dominate and in the rest of the half scored 3 trys, through Tom Williams, Craig Goodwin and Chris Burge, 2 of which were converted by Lloyd Williams. Lloyd also managed to slot home a penalty kick.

Just before half time the visitors scored another converted try, after some good kicking from their captain who was playing out of position at fly half.

Half time saw Captain Lloyd Williams being replaced after picking up a knock near the end of the half and powerful prop Matt Angel was replaced by Kyle Prescott who made an impact straight away by popping up in the backline several times.

The second half was not much of a spectacle, with Pethy only crossing the line once through player coach Matt Foad. Sam Williams converted as well as slotting home a penalty too.

It wasn’t the entertaining free flowing game Pethy had hoped for on their Old Players' Reunion day, but the situation was a tough one. Neither team performed to their best but the match was a good spirited friendly.

Tom Williams had a good game in attack, with a well taken individual try and many surging runs as Pethy tried hard to spread the ball wide and fast. But in doing so they lacked the structure and never really got the platform to launch quick attacks at an out numbered and disorganised defence. Credit to the visitors as they kept going until the final whistle.
