This match was sponsored by the club itself, in which they invited all this seasons sponsors to a pre match buffet. Along with it being a bit of a local derby, this meant for a large crowd of about 200. With conditions not exactly hot or humid, but very sticky under foot, it was never going to be an expansive game by either team.
The Oaks played up the slope, but had the wind on their backs in the first half and from the kick off tried to set out their stall in the Tiverton half. There were encouraging passages of play from Pethy with the forwards making good ground in the close however when the ball went wide they were unable to make use of the possession, mainly due to a very fast defensive backline who seemed a yard or two the wrong side the offside line all day .
It took Pethy 25mins to cross the line and actually score. Having to dig like a demented mole for the ball under a mass of bodies, Matt Angel crashed his way over from a yard out. He had crossed the line twice before but both times it wasn’t clear enough for the trys to be awarded. Sam Williams slotted the conversion.
Pethy had a poor restart, getting caught not releasing the ball in front of their posts. The easy penalty was converted. 7 – 3
Petherton gained good territory from the restart and were not letting Tiverton out of their half without a fight. The forwards were going into the rucks like wild carp and the pressure proved too much for the Tiverton side when their man was sin binned for breaking from the scrum too early.
Pethy kept the ball tight as the top end of the pitch was cutting up and making it hard for Hallaran to get quick clean ball, hindering throwing the ball wide quickly. The Pethy scrum was dominating well. The Tiverton prop was sent backwards several times by powerhouse Adam Modrzynski and no doubt he will have felt that one in the morning.
Sam Williams really was kicking like a machine in practice, but struggled with distance as the ground under foot softened and he missed a couple of difficult shots on goal.
It was 7 – 3 at the break and Petherton were left feeling they could have made more of an impression on the score board while they had a dryer pitch.
A combination of Matt Brown and Ben Tarr put in a crunching tackle on the nine and could have put him in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. After numerous attempts to score from scrums and lineout drives Pethy eventually crossed to score, James Cox claiming the try, Sam Williams was just wide with the conversion attempt. Finally Pethy’s assault on the Tiverton line produced the goods 10mins later, when their pack were pushing like a bunch of cattle trucks in a shunting yard provided good ball to score down the blind, Cox popping up on the short side wing to score just inside the touch line. The kicking duties were taken over by Captain Williams, who even under pressure from the betting going on around him by the supporters, mainly against him, slotted the conversion from the touch line, to a surprised cheer from the large crowd.
The forwards were like a bunch of Sherman tanks going up the field, with their driving mauls. Their fitness was starting to show and Pethy’s best try came at the end, a couple of close range drives, produced quick ball, spreading the ball wide exposed Tiverton’s defensive line and Chris Burge dived over the line untouched, Williams missed with the final kick of the game.
According to the forwards this game was won and lost in the forwards, but Petherton held almost all of the trump cards in that area. Tiverton never looked like scoring a try and the game was over as a contest long before the end. Pethy’s lineout worked well all afternoon and were unlucky to have a further two tries disallowed for not grounding the ball. Pethy finished their home campaign with a bang !!!!
