08/09/07 - Somerset One: North Petherton 45 v 7 Crewkerne

Pethy started up the slope and dominated well in the first 5 minutes, with a few half breaks down the blind and several phases of the forwards charging at the 10 channel. The ball was eventually spread wide and winger Bradley Archer had an easy run in over the line. Lloyd Williams converted from the side.

The next 10 minutes saw Pethy struggle to clear their 22 after a poor kick off. Following a turnover the Crewkerne backs had an attacking opportunity with several Pethy forwards in the back-line, a slight dog-leg was left and the opposition 10 broke through to off load to the 13 who scored under the posts for 7-7.

It wasn’t long before Pethy gained good field position and more good work down the short side saw Ben Williams with an easy run in (not converted). After another poor restart, Pethy took their time to get going and had to defend for long periods. There was also a period when Pethy kept getting turned over at the breakdown. The last try of the half was the best, after a long penalty kick to the corner, the forwards drove over the 22 meter line before Rybaruk sent the ball out to the backs, and in a training ground move, which saw the ball go behind both centre's and hit Ben Williams coming off his blindside wing at pace, resulted in a 3 on 1 and Bradley Archer went over for his second. Lloyd Williams converted from wide out for a half-time lead of 19-7.

The second period started well and Pethy were soon inside the opposition half. They worked a smart move that saw the ball go back inside from Lloyd Williams to Matt Brown, who then broke through the covering defence, drew the last defender and cleverly off loaded to Simon Gingell who galloped over. Lloyd Williams again converted.

The rest of the half was very stop-start, with both sides losing the ball around the tackle area and giving away many penalties. The next try came when Pethy attacked from deep in their own half during which the backs made a few half breaks, and were supported well by the forwards who showed quick hands in getting the ball to Lloyd Williams who, with Russ Williams as a dummy runner, ran through a gap in the defence and used his pace to round the last man and score. He then converted.

The restart was poor again and resulted in Pethy spending the next 15 to 20 minutes struggling to regain possession and often defending their own line. However, the defence held well. Eventually Pethy moved down field, and with a penalty kick to the corner they won the resulting lineout and released the ball to the backs, who were then briefly held up in midfield before producing quick ball which went back blind where Matt Brown found himself on the wing to score in the corner. This time the try went unconverted.

Tom Williams draws in the remaining Crewkerne defence before putting in Ben Williams for his try

The last try was another long range team effort in which the forwards set up clean ball on the halfway line, and again the centre's were used as dummy runners, with the ball being thrown wide. This time Archer came off his blind side wing at pace where he was well tackled, but quick support from backs and forwards saw Tom Williams pick up from the base and continue the attack. He ran wide drawing the remaining defenders across and at the last moment offloaded back inside to Lloyd Williams who ran it in.

Generally the defence was excellent, especially around the fringes where all of the forwards made huge tackles, especially James Lees and Rob Newton, often driving the opposition backwards. Coles, Robinson and Gingell were everywhere and the lineout produced good ball with Nick Pocock impressing in his first game at hooker. The backs showed pace, some good angles of running and Russ Williams and Rob Havill formed a brick wall in defence. However, Pethy were frustrated with their work at the restarts, their high penalty count and the amount of turnovers they conceded in the tackle area. Pethy did show in periods what they are capable of when they get into their stride, and all are hoping to develop this in future games.

This week there will be many selection problems after another good performance from the second team, most of whom are now training, and hopefully with new player's registration's also due to come through before Saturday's match at Combe Down.
